Parents & Grandparents’ (PGP) Sponsorships
The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is a unique Canadian program. It allows citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency. One of the most popular programs in this category is the Parent and Grandparent Program of Canada. In the year 2021, the Canadian authority IRCC accepted up to 30,000 extra applications.
This gave Canadian citizens and Permanent residents an opportunity to sponsor their parents and grandparents for a family reunion.
Sponsored parents and grandparents become permanent residents of Canada. They get all the benefits that come with it. This includes the right to live and work in Canada without restriction on location. As well as access to publicly-funded health care and other services. The sponsored parents and grandparents may become Canadian citizens.
There is a possibility of admitting 23,500 parents and grandparents in each of 2022 & 2023. Invited sponsors get 60 days for submission to their PGP sponsorship application to IRCC.
Eligibility for PGP Sponsors
The 2021 Parent and Grandparent Program utilized the same random invitation system, or lottery. This has been in place over recent years. Potential sponsors first completed an ‘interest to sponsor’ form. The steps to apply to sponsor parents and grandparents for Canadian permanent residency were a bit different for the 2021 process. Potential sponsors invited from the remaining pool of interest to sponsor forms submitted in 2020. IRCC then sent enough invitations to apply to reach its application intake targets.
Invited sponsors will be able to use IRCC’s new Permanent Resident Digital intake tool. This allows online submission. This is part of IRCC’s commitment to modernize Canada’s migration system. It also speeds up and simplify the application process.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, families have undergone huge strain in their income levels. Potential sponsors have suffered massive financial losses by the unexpected pandemic circumstances. Hence, IRCC is going to reduce the income rule for the 2020 tax year to the least necessary income. Instead of the least necessary income plus 30 percent.
