What is an educational credential assessment (ECA)? Why is ECA required for immigration purpose in Canada?
When an applicant plans to move in Canada from other country, they have to fulfill many eligibility criteria. Like employment documents Canada evaluated the educational documents also. The educational credentials are essential in helping your permanent residence and getting an employment in Canada.
If the applicant has completed an education from foreign country, then he/she need an educational credential assessment (ECA). This is an evaluation system that verifies and compares your degree with the Canadian standards. An Educational credential assessment (ECA) is used to verify that your foreign degree, diploma, or certificate (or other proof of your credential) is valid and equal to a Canadian one. There are different types of ECAs. You need to get an ECA for immigration purposes.
Who are the designated organization or professional bodies authorizing for ECA?
The education assessment is done by the designated organizations of Canada. These institutions are designated for the education evaluation for immigrants. They will give you a report that tells you what your education is equal to in Canada.
Processing times and costs may vary by organization or professional body.
Once you choose a designated organization or a professional body, they will tell you how to submit your documents to get your assessment.

You must use one of these designated organizations:
- Comparative Education Service – University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies (CES)
- International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS)
- World Education Services (WES)
- International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS)
- International Credential Evaluation Service – British Columbia Institute of Technology (ICES)

Which Credentials Get Assessed?
In most cases, the applicant only needs an assessment for your last two highest level of education.
For example, if the applicant has a Doctorate degree, he/she only need an assessment for that degree. You need one for your Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree.
If your post-secondary credential is not equal to a Canadian credential, you could get your secondary credential assessed. This would get you points for completing secondary school.
